WHAT'S UP GUERILLACLASSICS?

Ein Ort, an dem musikalische Projekte zu etwas Langfristigem heranwachsen können. So lautete das Motto des zweiten free flow festival des Vereins guerillaclassics, das vom 16. bis 23. Juni 2024 an verschiedenen Orten in Zürich stattfand.
12 Kurator*innen aus dem Netzwerk von guerillaclassics haben für das Festival je 1 bis 5 Künstler*innen aus verschiedenen Disziplinen vorgeschlagen, die dann in zwei Brainstorming-Sessions Ende 2023 und Anfang 2024 dezentral das Programm des Festivals konzipiert haben.
14 Neuproduktionen wurden schlussendlich am Festival gezeigt. Jedes Projekt hatte einen eigenen Fokus und eine eigene Thematik, alle Projekte vereinte aber, dass sie verschiedene Praxen der Musikkreation aufzeigten, neue Hörgewohnheiten fördern wollten und Perspektiven auf die Frage, was klassische Musik im 21. Jahrhundert sein könnte, warfen.

«Jetzt wurde ihnen, durch den Vergleich, plötzlich bewusst, unter welchen akustischen Bedingungen sie arbeiteten, und sie begannen sich zu überlegen, ob das denn so sein müsse, und ob es nicht eine Möglichkeit gebe, das zu ändern.»
Mit diesen Worten beschrieb der italienische Komponist Luigi Nono 1969 die Reaktion von Arbeiter*innen auf seine Komposition «La fabbrica illuminata» (1964), eine Collage für Sopran und vier Tonbänder, die Klänge eines Walzwerks, elektroakustisches Tonmaterial aus dem Studio sowie Chorstimmen enthalten. Die aktive Wahrnehmung der akustischen Umwelt, für Nono stets ein auch politischer Akt, führt zu einem neuen Bewusstsein und entwickelt ein utopisches Potenzial.
Normalerweise filtert das Hirn das beständige «weisse Rauschen», eine Überlagerung von Frequenzen, die uns in der modernen Welt umgeben und andere Töne unhörbar machen, automatisch aus der Wahrnehmung. Durch die gezielte und konzentrierte Verarbeitung dieser Signale entsteht jedoch Musik; zuvor unhörbar gemachte Stimmen werden laut. Analog dazu setzt sich der Dietikon Projektraum, in dem diese Listening Session stattfindet, dafür ein, Stimmen zu Beachtung zu verhelfen, die im «weissen Rauschen» der schweizerischen Standarderzählungen untergehen – zum Beispiel die Geschichte der italienischen Migrant*innen, die Dietikons Industrie seit fast hundert Jahren prägen.
Im Zentrum der Listening Session stehen mit «La fabbrica illuminata» und «Djamila Boupacha» zwei Kompositionen Luigi Nonos, gesungen von der Mailänder Sängerin Maria Eleonora Caminada, die zu den spannendsten Stimmen ihres Landes aus dem Bereich der Neuen Musik gehört. Bekannte Arbeiterlieder und elektroakustische Abenteuer zwischen Fabriklärm und Musik sowie ein Filmscreening und eine Ausstellung ergänzen das Programm.

Die Vision für das Projekt lässt sich von der historischen Architektur der Zwinglihaus-Kirche inspirieren, die Zeuge vieler Generationen war und als fester Anker inmitten einer Welt in ständiger Bewegung steht. Es lässt sich auch von den Menschen der italienischen Gemeinschaft inspirieren, die ein familiäres Umfeld mit einem Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit geschaffen haben. Mit diesem Projekt möchten wir erforschen, wie Musik und Kunst in einem Umfeld von Tradition und Gemeinschaft einen gemeinsamen Raum schaffen können, in dem sich die Teilnehmer*innen aktiv am Akt des Geschichtenerzählens beteiligen können.
Am 20. Oktober um 11:30 Uhr findet in der Zwinglikirche Zürich der dritte Workshop der Reihe "Io ti sento" statt. Dieses Mal tauchen wir in die Welt der bildenden Kunst ein und erforschen die Verbindung zwischen Bewegung und Tanz. Wir freuen uns, die italienische Künstlerin Silvia Rastelli begrüssen zu dürfen, deren Arbeit Malerei, Performance und Tanz auf wunderbare Weise miteinander verbindet. Die Teilnehmer*innen unserer früheren Workshops werden sich aktiv einbringen, so dass dies eine multidisziplinäre und interaktive Erfahrung wird. Wir laden alle italienischsprachigen Interessierten in Zürich herzlich ein, an dieser einzigartigen Veranstaltung teilzunehmen.

WHAT'S UP GUERILLACLASSICS?

A place where musical projects can grow into something long-term. This was the motto of the guerillaclassics association's second free flow festival, which took place at various locations in Zurich from June 16 to 23, 2024.
12 curators from the guerillaclassics network each proposed 1 to 5 artists from different disciplines for the festival, who then conceived the festival program in two decentralized brainstorming sessions at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024.
In the end, 14 new productions were shown at the festival. Each project had its own focus and subject matter, but all projects were united by the fact that they highlighted different practices of music creation, wanted to promote new listening habits and provided perspectives on the question of what classical music could be in the 21st century.

“Now, through the comparison, they suddenly became aware of the acoustic conditions under which they were working, and they began to wonder whether it had to be that way, and whether there wasn't a way to change it.”
With these words, the Italian composer Luigi Nono described the reaction of workers in 1969 to his composition “La fabbrica illuminata” (1964), a collage for soprano and four tapes containing the sounds of a rolling mill, electro-acoustic sound material from the studio and choral voices. The active perception of the acoustic environment, always a political act for Nono, leads to a new consciousness and development of utopian potential.
The brain normally automatically filters out the constant “white noise”, a superimposition of frequencies that surround us in the modern world and make other sounds inaudible. By processing these signals in a targeted and concentrated manner, however, music is created; previously unheard voices become audible. Similarly, the Dietikon Projektraum, where this listening session is taking place, is committed to giving attention to voices that are not heard in the “white noise” of standard Swiss storytelling - for example, the history of the Italian migrants who have been shaping Dietikon's industry for almost a hundred years.
At the heart of the listening session are two compositions by Luigi Nono, “La fabbrica illuminata” and “Djamila Boupacha”, sung by Milanese singer Maria Eleonora Caminada, who is one of the most exciting italian voices in the field of new music. Well-known workers' songs and electro-acoustic adventures between factory noise and music as well as a film screening and an exhibition complete the program.

Io ti Sento workshop
The vision for the project draws inspiration from the historic architecture of the Zwinglihaus church, which has witnessed many generations and stands as a firm anchor in the midst of a world in constant motion. It also draws inspiration from the people of the Italian community, who have created a family environment with a sense of belonging and togetherness. With this project, we want to explore how music and art can create a shared space in an environment of tradition and community, where participants can actively engage in the act of storytelling.
The third workshop in the “Io ti sento” series will take place on October 20 at 11:30 am at the Zwinglikirche Zurich. This time we will delve into the world of visual arts and explore the connection between movement and dance. We are delighted to welcome the Italian artist Silvia Rastelli, whose work combines painting, performance and dance in a wonderful way. Participants from our previous workshops will be actively involved, making this a multidisciplinary and interactive experience. We cordially invite all Italian-speaking people in Zurich to participate in this unique event.
