“Now, through the comparison, they suddenly became aware of the acoustic conditions under which they were working, and they began to think about whether it had to be like this and whether there wasn't a way to change it.”
With these words, the Italian composer Luigi Nono described the reaction of workers in 1969 to his composition “La fabbrica illuminata” (1964), a collage for soprano and four tapes containing the sounds of a rolling mill, electro-acoustic sound material from the studio and choral voices. The active perception of the acoustic environment, always a political act for Nono, leads to a new consciousness and develops a utopian potential.
Normally, the brain automatically filters out the constant “white noise”, a superimposition of frequencies that surround us in the modern world and make other sounds inaudible. However, the targeted and concentrated processing of these signals creates music; previously inaudible voices become loud. Similarly, the Dietikon Project Space, where this Listening Session takes place, is committed to helping voices to be heard that are drowned out by the “white noise” of standard Swiss narratives - for example, the history of the Italian migrants who have shaped Dietikon's industry for almost a hundred years.
At the heart of the listening session are two compositions by Luigi Nono, “La fabbrica illuminata” and “Djamila Boupacha”, sung by the Milanese singer Maria Eleonora Caminada, who is one of the most exciting voices in her country in the field of new music. An introductory meditation, electro-acoustic adventures between factory noise, noise and music, a film screening and an installation complete the program.
