«Imagine the museum empty!?»

WHAT'S UP?

«The Uninterrupted Song for the city» going places

«Imagine the museum empty!»

«What if we gave all the objects in the museum back?», fragte uns Aanza. Was könnte in diesem Ort dann stattfinden? Was legitimiert seine Existenz?

Wann: 31. März 2023
Wo: 18.35 Uhr, Höhenweg über der Werft Wollishofen | 20.00 Uhr, Bootssteg Bürkliplatz

The Year of Hope | Konzert im Chinagarten

«Imagine the museum empty!»

«First of all, I did not feel myself to be African», he (Chinua Achebe) wrote about his reaction to the African figures. «I took the side of the white man against the savage. The white man was good and reasonable, intelligent and brave. The savages who opposed him were sinister and stupid, or at least devious. I hated them like the plague.» As Achebe grew and read more critically, he began to understand the enormous power of stories and how much that power was shaped by who told the stories and how they were told.

(from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's preface to Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart)

Why the guerillaclassics team decided to read Chinua Achebe in preparation for one of the big upcoming projects will hopefully become clearer as you read on.

WHAT'S UP?

«The Uninterrupted Song for the city» going places

«Imagine the museum empty!» In a morning session with the team of guerillaclassics at Café Plüsch in Zurich, artist Sinzo Aanza had put this idea into our heads. For many years now, collections have been questioned for the colonial lootings and those of the Second World War. The idea of the empty museum raised questions such as: How does a museum make stories accessible and by whom are these stories told in a museum? Assuming a museum was empty – what would its role be then?

For an hour we discussed Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart in connection with these questions and came to Sinzo Aanza's idea of «The Uninterrupted Song for the City» – a project that also deals with the question of who has the power to tell a story and who actually tells it, where, to whom and why.

The collaborative sound installation was shared for the first time last year as part of the free flow festival and is currently being further developed in collaboration with various artists. The result will be shown at Museum Rietberg from 28 June until 2 July 2023.
«What if we gave all the objects in the museum back?», Aanza asked the guerillaclassics team. A place like the Museum Rietberg would suddenly be empty. What could take place in this place then? What legitimizes its existence?

Let's rewind a year:
In brainstorming sessions for the free flow festival in July 2022, Sinzo Aanza's idea of recomposing sound archives from Congo with the help of computer programmes and having them interact with live performers evolved further. The idea not only gave rise to a project in which artists from a wide variety of cultural and musical backgrounds met – namely Sinzo Aanza, Huguette Tolinga, Vincent Glanzmann, Vladimir Petrov and Hiromi Gut; the project offered and still offers an almost infinite number of possibilities for further development with new musicians and techniques.
After the premiere in Zurich, the sound recordings first went on to the Lubumbashi Biennale, where guitarist Vicko Tengwa accompanied them live; in January 2023, trumpeter Christophe Leloil interacted with the recordings at IMéRA in Marseille. The project returns to Zurich in April. Computer musician Philippe Kocher and sound designer Andreas Brüll will build a prototype of the sound installation in a workshop phase accompanied by curator and researcher Lynhan Balatbat-Helbock of Berlin's SAVVY Contemporary at Zurich's Hyperlokal, joined by artist and DJ Rokia Bamba, saxophonist Valentine Michaud and cellist Eden Sekulovi
ć, who will be confronted with the sound archives for the first time and will be able to interact with the «machine».

The sound installation resulting from the workshops will be shown at the Museum Rietberg at the end of June. Whether between full or empty showcases? We will see.

Seemann, lass das Träumen...!

A christening needs water. And especially a lot, if the baptized are three new Limmat boats, which are to get the blessing of the water police and the goddesses of Lake Zurich.
guerillaclassics created an acoustic intervention starting with a musical ensemble of diving policewomen and policemen, who will introduce the nautical concert by artist Brandy Butler accompanied by the sailor's choir «Thetis-Chor» from the upper Zürisee.

Where on Lake Zurich you should prick up your ears very carefully and look out for policemen and policewomen playing music? Psst: The high path above the Werft Wollishofen is supposed to be a good place to witness the spectacle.
A little later, the choir sings another serenade together with Brandy Butler at the jetty at Bürkliplatz.

When: 31 March 2023
Where: 6.35 pm, high path above the Werft Wollishofen | 8 pm, Bootssteg Bürkliplatz

The Year of Hope | Konzert im Chinagarten

Less than ten minutes away from the hustle and bustle and noise of Bellevue, on the Zürichhorn, lies what is probably one of the quietest places in the city: small pagodas, bamboo bushes, pines and ponds in the China Garden evoke the impression of the Far East; only very faintly, in the warmer months, does the music from the boom boxes and children's screams from the adjacent China Meadow waft over the walls surrounding the garden. How to give sound to silence without breaking it? Multi-instrumentalist Riccardo Acciarino from Milan and Bayanzul Damdinsure from Mongolia want to make an attempt in May.

The organization Mandach Naran, which supports various projects in Mongolia, had initiated the musical meeting a few months ago by making it possible for the two musicians to meet in Zurich.

When: May 20, 7 pm
Where: Chinagarten, Bellerivestrasse 138, 8008 Zurich

Following the concert, we invite you to a picnic by the lake to share impressions and ideas about the concert and
 current topics.
