Ein Ort, an dem musikalische Projekte zu etwas Langfristigem heranwachsen können. So lautet das Motto des zweiten free flow festival, das vom 16. bis 23. Juni 2024 an verschiedenen Orten in Zürich stattfindet.
Es soll zum Nachdenken anregen und die Sinne konfrontieren, mit Veranstaltungen wie der vernissage on vocabularies of essence (21.6.), bei der nuancierte Klänge aus Bewegung, Gesang und Musikinstrumenten entstehen, um die Grenzen der Sprache auszuloten, oder dem von Hasan Nakhleh geleiteten Ensemble, das sich auf die Spuren der Orgel von Aleppo über Leipzig bis Kairo begibt und nachzeichnet, wie melodische Skalen verwendet wurden, von der Kirche im alten Syrien über Bachs Musik bis hin zu den veränderten Keyboard-Melodien im Kairo der 1960er und 70er Jahre (20.6.).
free flow betrachtet die Welt durch eine andere Linse
Das 2022 ins Leben gerufene Festival soll sowohl die Teilnehmer*innen als auch das Publikum dazu ermutigen, "aus ihrer Komfortzone herauszutreten und zusammenzukommen, um offen auszutauschen", so die künstlerische Leiterin Hiromi Gut. Die Performances sind "works in progress", die "weiterentwickelt und in zukünftigen Ausgaben des Festivals oder in anderen kreativen Kontexten präsentiert werden können", wie sie anmerkt. Es ist "ein offener Raum, in dem jede*r willkommen ist, Teil der Erfahrung und der Gespräche zu sein".
Eines dieser Gespräche wird schliess die augen nicht - von kröten und alten gespenstern #freetalk (20.6.) sein, bei dem westliche klassische und zeitgenössische Musik, Literatur und queer-feministischer Aktivismus aufeinandertreffen, wenn das Duo Lis à Lis (Lis Marti und Lisa Läng) einen Robert-Schumann-Liederzyklus mit neuen Texten von Läng aufführt, die die sexistischen Rollenbilder verändern, eine Chance für das Publikum, das Werk in einem neuen Kontext zu hören.
Am 22.6. wird die verstorbene simbabwische Mbira-Spielerin und spirituelle Führerin Stella Chiweshe im Rahmen von transcending legacies gefeiert, wenn Robert Machiri mit Musik und einer biografischen Lektüre über Chiweshes bemerkenswertes Leben und ihre Kunst aufwartet.
Das Festival schliesst am 23.6. mit "watersheds" listening session, einem tiefgehenden Hören von Aufnahmen, die auf dem soundwalk suburban river sketch (der das Festival am 16.6. eröffnet) entstanden sind. Es ist eine Meditation über die Art und Weise, wie Wasser und Klang fließen können, und streckt seine Arme weit aus, um Musik und Kultur zu umarmen.
Bei dem Festival "geht es darum, sich auf eine Reise des persönlichen und kreativen Wachstums zu begeben, weg vom Druck, sich anzupassen, und hin zu dem, was musikalisch, künstlerisch und menschlich wirklich mit ihnen in Resonanz steht", so Gut.
Die Ausgabe 2024 soll nicht für sich allein stehen. Gut stellt sich vor, "dass sich das free flow festival weiterentwickelt und wächst, die Grenzen des künstlerischen Ausdrucks verschiebt und sinnvolle Verbindungen und Gespräche innerhalb und ausserhalb unserer Gemeinschaft fördert".
Die Zukunft ist voll von Möglichkeiten.

A place where the projects are encouraged to grow into something long-term. These are the hallmarks for the second free flow festival, taking place at venues across Zurich in Switzerland from June 16-23, 2024.
It’s intended to provoke thought and confront the senses, with events like vernissage (21/6) that air nuanced sounds alongside movement, vocals and music instruments to explore the limitations of language, or the ensemble led by Hasan Nakhleh with traces of the organ from Aleppo to leipzig to cairo, tracing how melodic scales were used, from the church of ancient Syria through Bach’s music to the altered keyboard tunes of 1960s and 70s Cairo (20/6).
free flow looks at the world through a different lens
Begun in 2022, the festival’s ethos is to encourage both participants and audience to “step outside the comfort zones and come together to celebrate without compromise,” according to artistic director Hiromi Gut. The performances are works in progress, she notes, that “could be further developed and be presented in future editions of the festival or in other creative context.” It’s “an open space where everyone is welcome to join and be part of the experience and conversations.”
One of those conversations will be <<schliess die augen nicht - von kröten und alten gespenstern>> #freetalk (20/6), where new western classical music, literature and queer-feminist activism meet, as the duo Lis à Lis (lis marti and lisa läng) perform a Robert Schumann song cycle with new lyrics by läng, changing the sexist role models, a chance for audiences to hear the work in a new context.
On 22/6, the late Zimbabwean mbira player and spiritual leader Stella Chiwese will be celebrated in transcending legacies as Robert Machiri offers music and a biographical lecture of Chiwese’s remarkable life and art.
The festival closes on 23/6 with watersheds, a deep listening to recordings made on the soundwalk suburban river sketch (which opens the festival 16/6). It’s a meditation on the way water and sound can flow and stretches its arms wide to embrace music and culture.
The festival “is about embracing a journey of personal and creative growth, away from the pressure to conform and towards what truly resonates with them musically, artistically, and humanly,” Gut says.
This 2024 edition isn’t intended to stand alone. Gut envisions “the free flow festival continuing to evolve and grow, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and fostering meaningful connections and conversations within our community and outside.”
The future is filled with possibilities.
