He was one of the most renowned figures of the New York avant-garde after World War II: Morton Feldman. And she was his student, now mainly known as the dedicatee of his piece “For Bunita Marcus.” From their first encounter in 1976 until Feldman's death in September 1987, the two had a close relationship, characterized on the one hand by a high degree of mutual appreciation and creative exchange on equal terms, but on the other hand also by a power imbalance and transgressions that amounted to a certain degree of artistic exploitation, as the composer made public in the 2000s. The Bernese pianist Lis Marti, who specializes in contemporary music with a particular focus on queer-feminist themes, plays Feldman's piece “Palais de Mari” (1986), inspired by Bunita Marcus, which in its twenty-five minutes of playing time was intended to condense the essence of his entire oeuvre into a small space. When he succumbed to cancer, she wrote the piano piece “But to Fashion A Lullaby for You” in his memory, which she revised again in 1998. In the “Resonanzraum #006,” curated by tracy september and Severin Kolb, the two voices meet on equal terms. Bern-based composer and sound artist Annie Rüfenacht, aka Annie Aries, draws inspiration from the two pieces for an intervention.
