Josephine Baker meets Beyoncé

An armchair named Fauteuil Grand Confort, three women dancing and playing on and around it: Valentine Michaud, Ana Đorđević and Lindi Mlaba. The first one has been awarded the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award for her exceptional saxophone play, the second one is a dancer and choreographer at Deutsche Oper Berlin, the third one has already performed with artists like Beyoncé and Sampa the Great.

Three artists that couldn’t be more different? Yes and no. In their first collective performance within the framework of the “Schall und Rauch” exhibition at Kunsthaus Zurich, the three are going to show us that blurring and breaking style boundaries can be even more inspiring than just staying in your comfort zone. In their artistic intervention between artworks and design objects ranging from the 1920s to our days, they’re not afraid of getting uncomfortable, questioning classical gender roles or imposed expectations by society. If Josephine Baker would suddenly dance around the corner and join the trio: we wouldn’t be surprised…

1st session: 3pm – 3.30pm at Kunsthaus
2nd session: 4pm – 4.30pm at Kunsthaus (SOLD OUT!)
3rd session: 6pm – 9pm in public spaces around Zurich (starting point: Stüssihofplatz)

The entrance to the performance is free and included in the ticket price for the “Schall und Rauch” exhibition at Kunsthaus. An additonal ticket for the performance is mandatory and can be booked here: http://bit.ly/tanzperformance-kunsthaus

The artists:

Ana Đorđević

From Belgrad to Monte Carlo, Munich, Düsseldorf, Augsburg and Berlin. Serbian dancer and choreographer Ana Đorđević has danced and lived in the most different places. After her studies at Serbian National Ballet, Academie de Dance Princess Grace and Heinz Bosl Stiftung Munich, she arrived to the German capital some years ago. There she’s dancing at Deutsche Oper and Komische Oper, besides pursuing her own dance projects.

Lindi Mlaba

She has danced in Beyoncé’s recently released video “Black is King” and performed with names like Jay-Z, Daddy Yankee and Sampa the Great. And the list goes on. South African dancer Lindi Mlaba lives for dancing and especially for Hip Hop. With her exceptional choreographies, her expressiveness and her stage presence, she has already won many awards, among them Hip Hop Schweizermeisterin 2015.

Valentine Michaud

French-born Valentine Michaud is one of today’s most talented and successful saxophone players – and has been in our artist pool for quite a while. For a guerilla-action at Zellweger-Park in Uster, she founded a saxophone quartet with which she played in Geneva’s Victoria Hall, among others. In January 2020, Valentine Michaud was awarded the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award.
